Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling.
I don’t a lot about Mindy Kaling other than her character in The Office US. I also know she has her own show ‘The Mindy Project’ which I haven’t had the pleasure of watching but probably will do now I’ve read this.
Mindy had plenty of opportunity with this book to name drop and imply that she got where she is today because of luck, but she doesn’t and it’s so refreshing. The book acts linear and follows Mindy as a child, through teenage years to her 20’s and beyond as she documents with excellent humour her journey to being the successful comedienne, actress, writer and producer that she is today. She marries anecdotes of personal experiences with sage advice for young girls and women who may want to venture into the world of comedy writing.
A lot of people tend to attribute their success to luck and being in the right place at the right time, but with Mindy she’s honest, it takes work and sometimes rejection, or doing jobs you don’t particularly enjoy just to get the experience. I really felt like I could relate to Mindy’s passion and determination and also the way she sometimes said the wrong thing to the wrong person. When she discusses her body shape I also wanted to reach in and hug her. Here’s a beautiful and successful woman embracing her body and saying I’m not fat but I’m not skinny either, I’m just me shaped and it’s like a breath of fresh air.
This is a brilliant book, it’s human and informative and to be honest with you, I wish Mindy could be my friend in real life. She’s worked hard to get where she is and she deserves it. Long may it continue!

Now excuse me whilst I go and buy Mindy’s other book ‘Why Not Me?’ because I need to read more about her, she’s awesome! Also she called the all female Ghostbusters movie, she should get some kind of recognition..<3
